The kindergarten classes are currently learning about fish, through our Zoology unit in our ARC curriculum. To enhance this learning, we invited Ben Wallace(a fisheries biologist) into the classrooms. Ben was able to compare and contrast how fish are different from other animals, and review the important organs fish have. The students were able to touch the fish, and ask important questions they had. Thank you to Mr. Wallace for sharing fish and knowledge!

This week the ESC 2nd grade students had the opportunity to learn about how farmers have a big impact on our community with Alayna Hansen from Loess Hills Ag in the Classroom. The kids watched a video on where our food comes from. Then they made a food web with Alayna to discuss how everyday items like clothes, food, sports equipment, etc, come from plants and animals raised on farms. Each month Alayna is going to come into the classroom to teach our students about agriculture. We want to thank Alayna for this experience for our kids to learn more about how agriculture helps our community!

Junior and Senior students in the Extended Learning Program (XLP), along with their teacher Mrs. Reese, greeted students this morning for High Five Friday! Many students enjoyed seeing familiar faces in the building. It is always great when our older Raiders can spend time with students at the elementary!

Before break, each East Sac County first grade student received decodable books to take home and keep. These books were given to them from Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Education. This is part of a program to promote literacy, form a partnership with parents, and help reinforce learning at home. This is cool! Our East Sac County first graders and their parents participated in a December "Read In". Our students have been working hard in the area of reading and wanted to showcase their parents what they have learned. During the "Parent Read In" the parents had the opportunity to hear our students recite 2 poems and sing a song about the Polar Express. Once the students were finished with their presentation they enjoyed snacks and read some good books with their family! As a school district we truly appreciate the parent involvement and commitment to learning we have at East Sac County!

Tis the season for giving to others without thinking about ourselves, and with that in mind two East Sac County 8th graders led an idea for an Angel Tree for gift donations in the school!! Hayden Fahrenkrog and Kylie Rudd came up to Mr. Tedesco with the idea and quickly worked to game plan how it could be done. With the help of Gail Eischeid from the local food pantry we were able to find 21 individuals who could use a little help around the holidays. The pictures show the vehicle full of gifts and some we still had on the cart. We are so proud of our students for their initiative, thoughtfulness and follow through with this great idea and for our student body and staff for getting the gifts and returning them on time for these families!!!
